You cannot deploy Unicode .pst files when you use the Custom Installation Wizard from the Office 2003 Resource Kit (842784)

SYMPTOMS

When you deploy Microsoft Office 2003 or Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 by using the Custom Installation Wizard from the Office 2003 Resource Kit, you cannot deploy Unicode Personal folder (.pst) files. (These files are also known as Unicode PST files and as Large PST files.)

When you start Outlook 2003, the Outlook profile (.prf) configuration that you have specified typically creates an ANSI .pst file. This is a file that is compatible with Outlook 97 and with Outlook 2002. If you have configured the Office User Settings in the Custom Installation Wizard to enable only Unicode .pst files to be created, no .pst file is created. Therefore, a .pst file is not added to the profile.

CAUSE

The Custom Installation Wizard for Office 2003 incorrectly configures the encryption type setting for compressible encryption in the Outlook .prf file. This value is incorrectly configured as 0x40000000. For Unicode .pst files, the correct value for the encryption type setting for compressible encryption is 0x50000000.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, export the .prf file from the Custom Installation Wizard, and then modify the file to set the EncryptionType=0x50000000 line. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On page 17 of the Office 2003 Custom Installation Wizard, configure a new Outlook profile. Continue the configuration on pages 18 through 19. On page 19, include large .pst files in the Add Accounts area.
  2. On page 20, click Export Profile Settings to export your .prf file to a file.
  3. Minimize the Custom Installation Wizard, and then right-click the .prf file that you saved in step 2. Click Open With, click Choose Program, and then click Notepad in the list of programs.

    Note Do not click to select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box.

    You will see a section that looks similar to the following:
    [Service3]
UniqueService=No
Name=Large Personal Folders
PathToPersonalFolders=C:\PST\Outlook.pst
EncryptionType=0x40000000
  4. Modify the EncryptionType=0x40000000 line to EncryptionType=0x50000000.
  5. Save the changes to the file, and then quit Notepad. Put this file on a network location that is accessible to the users whom you are deploying Office to.
  6. On page 17 of the Custom Installation Wizard, modify the selection to use the Apply PRF option, and then type the path for the .prf file.
  7. Finish the Custom Installation Wizard configuration, and then finish creating your .mst file.
Now you can deploy Outlook with a Unicode .pst file in the Outlook profile.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

For ANSI .pst files
  • EncryptionType = 0x20000000 (high encryption)
  • EncryptionType = 0x40000000 (compressible encryption)
  • EncryptionType = 0x80000000 (no encryption)


For Unicode .pst files
  • EncryptionType = 0x30000000 (high encryption)
  • EncryptionType = 0x50000000 (compressible encryption)
  • EncryptionType = 0x90000000 (no encryption)
