"Unexpected error 0x8007011c occurred" error message when you try to manage IIS 5.0 from a remote computer in Windows 2000 (842491)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, enable DCOM on the computer that you want to manage IIS from. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start the Component Services tool. To do this, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Component Services.
2. Expand Component Services, and then expand Computers.
3. Under Computers, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Default Properties tab, and then click to select the Enable Distributed COM on this computer check box.
5. Click OK. You receive the following message: Changes have been applied but will not take effect until the local machine is rebooted. Click OK.
6. Quit the Component Services tool, and then restart the computer.

If the issue is not resolved, verify the DCOM configuration permissions. At a minimum, the local Administrators group must have Full Control permission to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry key, and both the IUSR_ComputerName account and the IWAM_ComputerName account must have Read permissions to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry key.

To verify the local Administrators group permission settings, follow these steps:

1. On the client computer that you want to manage IIS from, click Start, click Run, type dcomcnfg in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Click the Default Security tab, and then click Edit Default under Default Configuration Permissions.
3. In the Name list, click LocalComputerName\Administrators.
   
   Note LocalComputerName is a placeholder for the name of the local computer that you want to manage IIS from.
4. Verify that Full Control appears in the Type of Access list.
5. Click OK two times, and then restart the computer.
