Multiple attachments do not paste as expected in a new e-mail message in Outlook 2002 (840392)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you paste two or more attachments that are from an existing e-mail message in a new Microsoft Outlook 2002 e-mail message, only one of the attachments will paste as expected. The other attachments retain their file names, but the data that is inside these attachments is a duplicate of the data that is in the attachment that pasted correctly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you close the original e-mail message that you copied the attachments from before you pasted the attachments in the new e-mail message. When you close the original e-mail message that you copied the attachments from, you receive the following message:

You placed a large amount of data on the clipboard. Do you want this data to be available to Microsoft Outlook or other programs after you close this window?

There is not sufficient information available on the clipboard to retain all the data that is contained in the multiple copied attachments. Only the data from one of the attachments is retained, and it is duplicated in the other attachments when you paste them in the new e-mail message.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following methods to work around this problem:
  • Save the attachments to your hard disk, and then attach them to the e-mail message. To attach an attachment to an e-mail message, follow these steps:
    1. Click in the body of the e-mail message.
    2. On the File menu, click Insert.
    3. Click the file that you want to attach, and then click Insert.
  • Keep the original e-mail message that you copied the attachments from open when you paste the attachments in the new e-mail message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
