FIX: The metadata of Windows Media content is hidden from the shell when you switch locales (840259)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Format 9 Series SDK
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows Server 2003
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

If you add metadata from a locale that is different from the locale that the content was created in, you cannot see the newly added metadata when you view the metadata by means of Microsoft Windows Explorer.

CAUSE

Although you can use Windows Media Player 9 Series to add metadata for multiple languages to an Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) file, the shell only displays metadata from the locale that the content was originally created in.

MORE INFORMATION

After you download the package that is mentioned earlier, run the tool on Windows Media content before you add metadata from the new locale.

The tool that you downloaded is located in the following folder:

%systemdrive%\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Tools\WMDelLanguageList

By using this tool, you can run a command with the following parameters:

wmdellanguagelist.exe /S file_name

The /S switch is to include Subdirectories. The file_name placeholder is for the path and the name of the file.

For example, you can run the following command:

wmdellanguagelist.exe /S c:\music\*.wma

This command updates all .wma files in the C:\Music folder and its subdirectories.
