SUMMARY

Microsoft Project allows the use of Summary tasks in Predecessor and Successor relationships. These relationships are limited in type, and can affect task scheduling in ways that may not be obvious.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Project 98

Summary tasks can only be involved in Finish To Start or Start To Start relationships. The additional types of task relationships, Start To Finish, and Finish To Finish, are not allowed with Summary tasks.

Microsoft Project 3.0, 4.0, 4.1

Summary tasks can only be involved in Finish To Start relationships. The additional types of task relationships, Start To Start, Start To Finish, and Finish To Finish, are not allowed with Summary tasks.

When a Summary task is linked as a Successor, scheduling occurs exactly as it would if each of its detail tasks were linked as Successors. If one of the detail tasks has a fixed start date, this may produce what appears to be unusual behavior in the other detail tasks.
