Form controls do not appear when you reply to an e-mail message in Word 2003 (839374)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Word 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you reply to an e-mail message that contains OCX form controls by using Microsoft Office Word 2003 as your e-mail editor, the OCX form controls may be missing in the reply e-mail message.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because, by default, to improve performance, the OCX form controls are removed from the e-mail messages when you reply to them.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue so that Word 2003 includes the OCX form controls in replies, set the ShowFormsInWordMail DWORD value in the following registry subkey to 1:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options

To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate, and then expand the following registry subkey, if your computer is not controlled by local policies:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options

  4. In the right pane, right-click ShowFormsInWordMail, and then click Modify.
  5. In the Edit DWORD Value window, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  6. If the ShowFormsInWordMail subkey is not available, you may have to create a new subkey. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
    2. Type ShowFormsInWordMail, and then click OK.
    3. To set the DWORD value to 1, follow the procedure as mentioned in steps 4 and 5.
  7. If this issue is controlled by local policies on your computer, you may have to edit the following subkey. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Locate, and then expand the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options

    2. In the right pane, right-click ShowFormsInWordMail, and then click Modify.
    3. In the Edit DWORD Value window, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  8. Quit Registry Editor.

MORE INFORMATION

The different values of the ShowFormsInWordMail registry subkey are as follows:
  • 0 = OCX form control is removed when you reply.
  • 1 = OCX form control is retained when you reply.
Note If you configure the ShowFormsInWordMail subkey to 1, the performance of WordMail slows down.
