You cannot insert a signature in a new e-mail message in Outlook 2002 (839364)

SYMPTOMS

When you are using Microsoft Outlook 2002 with Microsoft Word 2002 set as your default e-mail editor, you may not be able to insert a signature in your e-mail message.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following two conditions are true:
  • You use Word 2002 as the default e-mail editor.
  • You have not created a signature.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow the steps that are in one of the following two methods.

Method 1: Create a signature for Word 2002

Create a signature for new e-mail messages. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In Outlook 2002, click Options on the Tools menu, and then click the Mail Format tab.
  2. In the Options dialog box, click the Signatures button under Signatures.
  3. In the Create Signature dialog box, click New.
  4. Type a name for your signature, and then click Next.
  5. Type your signature, apply the formatting that you want, and then click Finish.
  6. In the Options dialog box, click OK.

Method 2: Set Outlook 2002 so that Word 2002 is not the default e-mail editor

Set Outlook 2002 so that Word 2002 is not your default e-mail editor. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In Outlook 2002, click Options on the Tools menu, and then click the Mail Format tab.
  2. Click to clear the Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages check box.
  3. Click OK.

To add your signature to your e-mail message, follow these steps:
  1. In the body of your e-mail message, put the insertion point at the location where you want your signature to appear.
  2. On the menu, click Insert, point to Signature, and then click your signature.
