Issues to consider before you install multiple MDAC updates by using Systems Management Server (838434)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0

SUMMARY

The update management tools in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) with the Software Update Services (SUS) Feature Pack installed can detect the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) updates that are required on a client computer. You can then automate installation of the MDAC updates to the client. This new functionality is provided by the integration of Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) 1.2 into the SMS update management tools. However, because MDAC uses a different technology to create updates, there are several potential issues to consider before you try to combine multiple MDAC updates in the same package.

Note Because the SUS Feature Pack is built into Microsoft SMS 2003, the same functionality and issues apply to SMS 2003.

MORE INFORMATION

The Distribute Software Updates Wizard uses the QChain.exe utility to combine multiple updates into one installation package. Make sure that you use QChain.exe only with updates that are created by using the Hotfix.exe or the Update.exe programs. MDAC update packages are created by using the DAHotfix.exe and the DASetup.exe programs. Do not chain multiple MDAC updates that contain different versions of the same files. Deploy MDAC updates as separate update packages whenever possible.

When you try to chain together multiple MDAC updates, you may experience one or more of the following issues:
  • File installation steps are not completed in the order that they were run. This may cause inconsistencies in the file versions.
  • Some files are not updated correctly because the files are locked during multiple-update installations.
  • After the computer is restarted, file versions are not updated correctly, and this prevents the installation of subsequent updates.
