Previously submitted actual work may shift after a project plan is updated in Microsoft Office Project 2003 (838024)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003
  • Microsoft Office Project Standard 2003

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenarios:
  • A resource submits the actual work on an administrative task. The project manager then updates the project file. In this scenario, the actual work that a different resource previously submitted may be pushed out (shifted) later in the project time line.
  • A resource submits the actual work on an administrative task with the Notify your manager of time you will not be available for project work option enabled. The project manager then updates the project file. In this scenario, the actual work that the resource submitted is pushed out (shifted) later in the project time line.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the data that is in the Actual field for each task is not equal to the start date of the project.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, adjust the data that is in the Actual field for each task so that it is equal to the project's start date. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open the administrative project from Microsoft Project Server.
  2. On the Project menu, click Project Information.
  3. Make a note of the date that appears in the Start Date field.
  4. Close the Project Information window.
  5. On the View menu, click Gantt Chart.
  6. If an Actual Start column does not appear in the Gantt Chart view, add one. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the Insert menu, click Column.
    2. On the Field Name menu, click Actual Start.
    3. Click OK.
  7. If you have to, change the actual start date of the first task in your project to coincide with the start date of the project.
  8. Click the actual start date of the first task, and then drag the column down to select all the tasks.
  9. Right-click the selected data, and then click Fill Down.
All the tasks should now have an actual start date that coincides with the project start date.
