You receive a "'Name' contains at least one of the following characters that is not valid" error message when you use the Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004 Configuration Wizard (837855)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004, you may receive the following error message when you create the host in the BizTalk Configuration Wizard:
String "BizTalk Server Application" for property "Name" contains at least one of the following characters that is not valid: ` ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) + = [ ] { } | \ / ; : " ' < > , . ? <space>

CAUSE

This issue may occur in the BizTalk Configuration Wizard when the BizTalk host name contains a character that is not valid.

This issue occurs most frequently if the BizTalk host name contains a space.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, unconfigure BizTalk Server, and then reconfigure BizTalk Server. When you reconfigure BizTalk Server, make sure that you do not use spaces or invalid characters in the BizTalk host name.

To unconfigure and reconfigure BizTalk Server, follow these steps:
  1. Run the Configuration Wizard with the /u (unconfigure) option:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    2. At the command prompt, change to the following directory:

      Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004

    3. At the command prompt, run the ConfigFramework.exe /u command. For example, the command might appear similar to the following:

      Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004\ConfigFramework.exe /u

    4. Press ENTER.

      Note This process may take several minutes.
  2. Run the BizTalk Configuration Wizard again. To do this, click Start, click Run, type ConfigFramework.exe, and then click OK.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
