You receive an error message that states that a performance category already exists when you try to configure BizTalk Server 2004 (836463)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004 Developer Edition
  • Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004 Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004 Partner Edition
  • Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004 Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004 Configuration Wizard to configure Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004, you may experience all the following symptoms:
  • You receive an error message that states that a performance category already exists.
  • If you click Cancel, the installation is rolled back, and the following information appears on the last page of the Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004 Configuration Wizard:

    Configuration failed

The configuration failed and no settings were applied.

A Logfile has been created in your temp directory.
  • If you click the Logfile link, a message that is similar to the following appears in the log file:

Cannot create Performance Category because it already exists.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you install BizTalk Server 2004 on a computer where an earlier pre-release build of BizTalk Server 2004 was installed. In this scenario, the Microsoft .NET Framework performance counters that are installed by the earlier pre-release build of BizTalk may not be completely removed when you remove the earlier pre-release build of BizTalk. Because these performance counters remain installed on the computer, the new installation and configuration of BizTalk cannot install these performance counters.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, run the installutil /u command against all the following assemblies in the Business Activity Services subfolder of your BizTalk 2004 installation folder, and then restart the BizTalk Server 2004 Configuration Wizard:
  • TPM\Management\bin\Microsoft.BizTalk.KwTpm.TPMgmtWSPerf.dll
  • TPM\Publishing\bin\Microsoft.BizTalk.KwTpm.TPPubWSPerf.dll
  • KwSts\Shared\Microsoft.BizTalk.KwTpm.StsWebServicePerf.dll
Note By default, the InstallUtil.exe tool is located in the following folder:

C:\Windows\Microsoft .NET\Framework\v1.1.4322
