Internet Explorer opens a restricted folder on an Apache 2.0 WebDAV server (836437)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 may open a window for a restricted folder on an Apache 2.0 Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because WebDAV redirector uses the information cache to create a local folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

WebDAV redirector maintains a file name information cache for quick reference. This cache contains the data that the parent query directory returns. On the Apache 2.0 server, an entry is created for the private folder.

WebDAV redirector performs a create path verification to verify that the name exists in the file information cache. If the name exists, WebDAV creates the folder without sending it to the server. However, Internet Explorer does not cache the access rights. Therefore, Internet Explorer cannot detect if the user has permissions to access this folder. The folder is created, and Internet Explorer receives a handle. When the server performs a find first operation on this handle, the operation returns a "file not found" error message. Therefore, Internet Explorer opens a window for this folder.
