You cannot transfer files from a multihomed computer to another Windows Messenger user by using Windows Messenger 5.0 (835972)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Messenger 5.0

SYMPTOMS

When you try to transfer a file from Microsoft Windows Messenger 5.0 to another Windows Messenger user, you are unsuccessful. However, you can successfully transfer files to other Windows Messenger users by using earlier versions of Windows Messenger.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if your computer is multihomed (has more than one network adapter installed) or if the network adapter that is in your computer has multiple network adapter bindings. For example, this problem occurs if you have programs that are installed that create virtual network adapters, such as VMware Workstation.

In this scenario, when you try to transfer a file, Windows Messenger 5.0 sends an incorrect IP address to the recipient Messenger client. Instead of sending the correct IP address, Messenger sends the IP address that is bound to the virtual network adapter, or Messenger sends the IP address that is bound to the other installed network adapter. Therefore, the recipient cannot connect to the computer to complete the file transfer operation. Therefore, the file transfer operation is unsuccessful.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem download and install the latest version of Windows Messenger. To obtain the latest version of Windows Messenger, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Windows Messenger 5.0.482 and later versions resolve this problem by sending the local IP address that the receiving client can connect to.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows Messenger 5.0. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Windows Messenger 5.0.482.
