The virtual machine quits unexpectedly when you install Windows NT 4.0 Workstation SP1 on a virtual machine in Virtual PC 2004 (835353)

SYMPTOMSIn Microsoft Virtual PC 2004, when you run the Setup program to install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a virtual machine, the virtual machine quits unexpectedly (crashes), and you receive a Stop error.CAUSEThis problem occurs because the Vmm.sys driver in Virtual PC reports an incorrect page fault address to the Windows NT 4.0 Workstation kernel. This problem may occur if both the following conditions are true: - You use a bootable CD-ROM to install Windows NT 4.0 Workstation Service Pack (SP1) on the virtual machine.
- The virtual machine has 256 megabytes (MB) of RAM available.
WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, reduce the RAM that is available to the virtual machine to 64 MB, and then run the Setup program to install Windows NT 4.0 Workstation SP1 on the virtual machine. After Windows NT 4.0 Workstation SP1 is installed on the virtual machine, increase the RAM to the setting that you want. To change the memory allocation for a virtual machine, follow these steps: - Start Virtual PC.
- In the list of virtual machines, click the virtual machine that you want to configure, and then click Settings.
- In the Setting column, click Memory.
- To modify the memory allocation, use one of the following methods:
- In the RAM box, type the number of megabytes that you want to allocate to the virtual machine.
- Move the slider until the number of megabytes that you want to allocate to the virtual machine appears in the RAM box.
- Click OK.
