FIX: The Cache-Control header cannot be removed from the Response header in the .NET Framework 1.1 (835260)

SYMPTOMS

Sometimes, you may want to control and to reduce the Response header size in the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1. To add more control of the response data size, code was added to let you remove the Cache-Control header from the Response header.

RESOLUTION

Software update information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Machine.config file information

You must modify the Machine.config file after you install this software update. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Install this software update.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type explorer, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then open the Machine.config file.

    Note By default, the Machine.config file is the %SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\CONFIG folder.
  4. In the httpRuntime section, make the following changes:
    • enableVersionHeader = "true"
    • sendCacheControlHeader = "false"
  5. Close the Machine.config file.
  6. Click Start, click Run, type command, and then click OK.
  7. In the Command.com window, type start inetmgr, and then press ENTER.
  8. In the Internet Information Services dialog box, right-click Web Sites, and then click Properties.
  9. In the Web Sites Properties dialog box, click the HTTP Headers tab, click X-Powered-By: ASP.NET, and then click Remove.
  10. Click OK.
  11. In the Internet Information Services dialog box, click Exit on the File menu.

File information

The English version of this software update has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
