SUMMARY

When you try to play an audio CD in Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series, you may receive an error message. You can expect to resolve the problem by resetting a registry key.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to play an audio CD from the Windows Media Player, you may receive the following error message:
Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file. Error code 0xC00D1197
The same CD may play back in other multimedia applications.

If you try to drag a .cda file from Microsoft Windows Explorer to Windows Media Player, the CD does not play as you expect.

CAUSE

Third-party applications that can play audio CDs may change specific registry keys. These types of changes can prevent Windows Media Player from playing audio CDs. When you remove these third-party programs, the registry key is not restored to its original setting.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Start Registry Editor and find the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaResources\mci

  2. Export the cdaudio key, and then delete the cdaudio key.
  3. Restart your computer, and then try to play an audio CD.

    You can expect to play audio CDs and not receive an error message.
