SYMPTOMSWhen you try to run the Microsoft Broadband Networking Setup
Wizard on your computer, the wizard does not start. CAUSEThis issue may occur when the Network ID setting on your
computer is configured with a workgroup name that contains a special
character--for example, a period.
A workgroup name can contain up to
15 characters, including letters, numbers, and the following characters:! @ # $ % ^ & ( ) _ - ; : ' " ,. It cannot contain any spaces, and must start with a letter or a
number. The NetBiosName class considers the majority of those special
characters as invalid so the problem may occur if the workgroup name contains
other characters besides the period. RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, change the workgroup name to
something that does not contain special characters. To do this, follow these
steps. Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the
following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your
product documentation to complete these steps.
Note Follow these steps on all computers that are in your workgroup.
- Click Start, right-click My
Computer, and then click Properties.
- In the System Properties tab, click the
Computer Name tab, and then click
Change.
- Under Member of, click
Workgroup, and then type a name for your workgroup that does
not contain any special characters.
- Click OK, and then restart your
computer.
