The User Name Mapping service does not start if the network cable is unplugged (833605)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 2.0
- Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 2.3 OEM Only
- Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.0
- Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003
SYMPTOMSIf you start Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 and if the network cable is unplugged, the User Name Mapping service does not start. Additionally, the event log will
register the following error messages: - Error 1003:
Warning - "Mapping information
could not be obtained from Username Mapping", Source: NfsSvr, Event ID:
1003. - Error 7022:
Error -"The User Name mapping service hung on starting", Source:
Service Control Manager, Event ID: 7022. - Error 7034:
Error -"The User Name mapping
service has terminated unexpectedly" Source: Service Control Manager, Event ID:
7034.
Although the exact event ID may vary, these errors occur on any Windows-based operating system with the versions of Microsoft Windows services for UNIX that are listed in the "applies to" section of this article. CAUSEThese errors occur because the User Name Mapping service is dependent on the network connectivity and must have at least one network connection to start.RESOLUTIONTo resolve the problem if
the network cable is unplugged, reconnect the network cable, and then restart the User Name Mapping service.
To prevent the User Name Mapping service from
stopping, install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter. This adapter will make sure that at least
one network connection is present. STATUS This behavior is by
design.
