You receive a "Couldn't load DLL ScanHlpr.dll" error message when you run Feature Pack scan tools (832491)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you run the scan tools from the Security Update Inventory Tool or from the Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates, a Systems Management Server (SMS) client may generate a 10007 SMS status message, and you may receive the following error message:
Couldn't load DLL ScanHlpr.dll
When you receive this error message, the scan is aborted. Additionally, the SecurityPatch.log and the OfficePatch.log logs contain the following last line:
Calling scan helper function to remove aged out patch inventory
These scan tools are part of the Software Update Services (SUS) Feature Pack.

CAUSE

When many SMS clients perform a scan at the same time, some of them may not load Scanhlpr.dll from the SMS distribution point because other SMS clients are using Scanhlpr.dll.

How to install the hotfix

To install the hotfix, run the updated Setup program, SecurityPatch_x.exe or OfficePatch_x, where x is the three-digit language code).

Note Setup detects and removes previous installations of the tool, but you can permit The Setup Program To skip the removal of the collections, packages, programs, and advertisements that a previous installation of the tool created. If you keep the existing SMS objects that you used during a previous deployment, Setup reuses these objects. If a previous deployment used customized settings, review the settings for the collections, packages, programs, and advertisements to make sure that they are appropriate for your environment. The settings that Setup uses are reasonable default settings, but they may not suit all environments.

MORE INFORMATION

After you install this hotfix, the scan tools load Scanhlpr.dll from the local hard disk drive instead of from the SMS distribution point. This behavior helps avoid conflicts when you load the file.
