"Stop - c0000415" error message when you try to start Windows XP (832324)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Windows XP, you cannot successfully start Windows XP. When you try to start Windows XP, you receive the following error message on a blue screen:
Stop - c0000415 : " unknown hard error"

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you have an ATI Radeon 7200 series display adapter installed on your computer. The drivers that are supplied with this adapter may not work correctly with Windows XP.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2. To install Windows XP SP2, visit the Windows Update Web site at: http://support.microsoft.com/xpsp2getinstall

WORKAROUND

You may be able to work around this issue by disabling your ATI display adapter in safe mode. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start your computer in Safe Mode (see Part 2 from the "Resolution" section).
  2. Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager in the left pane of the Computer Management window.
  3. In the right pane of the Computer Management window, expand Display Adapters, right-click your ATI display adapter, and then click Disable.
  4. Restart your computer as you would normally.
