Error message when a Windows 2000-based computer or a Windows Server 2003-based computer that is running Remote Installation Services cannot display all its operating system images (832213)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

When you start a Pre-Boot Execution Environment (PXE) client from a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer or a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer that is running Remote Installation Services (RIS), you may receive the following error message:
The server ServerName attempted to send a message screen that was too long to display within the client installation wizard. Contact your network administrator for assistance.
Note This error comes from the 00004e53.osc file.

Alternatively, you may not see all the images that are available on the RIS server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the amount of information that you can display in the Client Installation Wizard (CIW) is limited. If you use the maximum number of characters for both the "Description" and the "Help" subsections under the "OSChooser" section of each .sif file, CIW can only display 16 operating system images. However, if you limit the amount of text in each of these subsections, you can display up to 26 operating system images.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, limit the number of characters in both the "Description" and the "Help" subsections of each .sif file. You can also set access control lists (ACLs) in the .sif files so that only certain images appear for users.
