You receive multiple prompts to type your user credentials when you try to access a public folder in Exchange Server 2003 Outlook Web Access (831820)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) client to access a public folder, you are prompted three times to type your user credentials. After you type your user credentials for the third time and then click OK, you receive the following message: The folder can't be displayed. You don't have permissions to perform this action. These symptoms occur when you do either of the following actions:
  • You click a public folder to view the contents.
  • You try to post a message to the public folder.
Although you are prompted multiple times for your user credentials when you try to post a message to the public folder, the message is successfully delivered.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when all the following conditions are true:
  • You use OWA to access the public folder.
  • Your user account is assigned the Contributor role to the public folder.
  • The public folder is located on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 computer.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

MORE INFORMATION

After you install the hotfix, when you try to access a public folder in OWA with the Contributor role, you are prompted only one time for your user credentials when you try to view the contents of the public folder and one time when you try to post an item to the public folder. You still cannot view the contents of the public folder, because the Contributor role does not include the permission to read the folder contents.
