The Automatically Detect Settings feature is turned on even with restricted access in Internet Explorer 6 (830849)

SYMPTOMS

When you view the options in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, the Automatically Detect Settings setting may be set even though this feature was turned off earlier.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because you click the Detect Network Settings link on the page that you received for a bad link or a missing server.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

This hotfix prevents the Automatically Detect Settings setting from changing when you click the Detect Network Settings link. This hotfix only works on computers where Group Policy prevents access to the Connections tab or prevents you from configuring this setting. After you apply this hotfix, Internet Explorer looks for the following registry entries:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel\ConnectionsTab

    To hide the Connections tab, set the value of this DWORD to 1.
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel\Autoconfig

    To disable the Automatically Detect Settings check box, set the value of this DWORD to 1.
