The wrong channel is selected when you use the Media Center remote control device and a set-top box (830842)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Media Center remote control device to change channels while watching Live TV in Windows XP Media Center Edition, the expected channel many not be displayed.

Note This behavior occurs only in configurations where you use a TV set-top box.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the response time between the remote control device and the set-top box is slow. Therefore, you may see any one of the following behaviors when you use the Media Center remote control to change channels in Live TV:
  • When you press the Channel Up (+) button or the Channel Down (-) button several times in rapid succession the Media Center remote control, your set-top box may not correctly parse each channel number change that has been queued. For example, changing channels for 060 to 062 by using the [+] button on the remote control sends 061 062 063 to the set-top box. However, you may see that channel 206 is displayed on the set-top box because it took the 2 from channel 062 and added it to the 06 of channel 063.
  • Pressing the [+] or [-] buttons on the Media Center remote control to change channels causes the wrong channel to be selected. For example, if you press the [+] button one time on the remote control to change the channel from 124 to 125, the set-top box interprets this action as if you selected channels 1,2, and 5.
  • Using the remote control to manually enter in a 3 or 4 digit TV channel causes the channel to change after the first digit has been pressed. For example, when you use the remote to manually switch to channel 123, the channel may change after the first digit has been pressed on the remote control. You expect the channel to change after you press the third and fourth numeric button.

To resolve this behavior so that you can select channels by using the remote control device, select the "Yes, I have to press ENTER or OK" option. To change this setting, follow these steps:
