Two Authentication Prompts When You Use an ISAPI Filter for Authentication (830520)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Information Services version 6.0
  • Microsoft Commerce Server 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you use an Internet Services API (ISAPI) filter to implement authentication, you may receive two authentication prompts when you try to access the default document. For example, this behavior may occur when you are using Windows Authentication mode in Microsoft Commerce Server 2002.

CAUSE

The credentials that are supplied in the ISAPI filter when the filter handles the SF_NOTIFY_AUTHENTICATION notification are not used when Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) loads the default document. If the default document is not configured for anonymous access, the user is prompted for credentials again.

MORE INFORMATION

If you are using Microsoft Commerce Server 2002 on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with AuthFilter in Windows Authentication mode, this fix is required.

This hotfix corrects a problem in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS). Applications other than Commerce Server 2002 may also have this problem if IIS sends the SF_NOTIFY_AUTHENTICATION notification to the ISAPI filter and the filter then supplies the user credentials.
