SMS Reports That an Advertisement Succeeded, but the Advertised Program Did Not Run (829864)

SYMPTOMS

When you view the status of a scheduled advertisement in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003, the advertisement appears as Succeeded even though the advertised program did not run.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • You configure an advertisement as optional.

    -and-
  • You use a dependant program chain, where the child program depends on the parent program.

    -and-
  • The user logs on or off the client computer. (The user must do this for the parent program to work.)
In this situation, the SMS Program Execution Manager does not send a "waiting for user condition" status message.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, configure the advertisement as mandatory. When an advertisement is part of a dependent chain, you must configure the advertisement as mandatory. When you do so, the Program Execution Manager sends the appropriate "waiting for user condition" status message when the program requires user action on the client computer.
