Systems Management Server 2003 Advanced Client runs the incorrect program (829829)

SYMPTOMS

After you rebuild your Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 site, an Advanced Client may run the incorrect program.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you rebuild your SMS site by using the same site code as the previous site installation, and existing copies of the Advanced Client are not removed and reinstalled.

Note You may reuse the Package IDs that were advertised to the clients from the previous installation.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, delete the Package ID folders in the temporary program download folder by using a script or by other means. Alternatively, you can specify a new download folder location. By default, this location is %windir%\System32\Ccm\Cache, where %windir% is the folder where Microsoft Windows is installed. If the Advanced Client also hosts an SMS management point, the default cache location is \SMS_CCM\Cache.

Note The location of a client's temporary program download folder may be customized by a user who has administrative credentials.

If an advertisement is configured to download and store packages, the SMS Advanced Client maintains a Cache folder where package source files are downloaded and stored. By using the Cache folder, the Advanced Client can install a package without having to contact a distribution point. The Package ID is used to store the package source files in the <%windir%>\System32\Ccm\Cache folder. When you rebuild your SMS site by using the same site code as the previous site installation, the Package ID and advertisement IDs are reused. For example, these IDs are reused if the following steps occur:
  1. You install an SMS site with a site code of "TST," and you install Advanced Clients.
  2. You create a package to run the "XYZ" program. The Package ID is "TST00001".
  3. You create a recurring advertisement with the "Download program from (remote) distribution point" property.
  4. The Advanced Clients download the package source files and run the "XYZ" program.
  5. You remove and reinstall the SMS 2003 site without removing Advanced Clients, and you reuse the original "TST" site code.
  6. You create a package to run the "ABC" program. This package is also assigned the "TST00001" Package ID.
  7. After the new package is advertised, the Advanced Client determines that Package ID "TST00001" already exists in the local Cache folder.
  8. The "TST00001" Package ID is processed. However, program "XYZ" is incorrectly executed.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
