Beta text appears in the splash screen for Office 2003 programs (829773)

SYMPTOMS

When you start any one of the Microsoft Office 2003 programs that are listed in the "Applies To" section, the splash screen that appears as the program starts may contain the following text:

CAUSE

This behavior occurs on computers that previously had the beta version of the program installed. The text that appears in the splash screen is from the beta version of the program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you must delete the contents of the registry key that contains the beta splash screen information. To do this, follow these steps.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Locate the following subkey in the registry

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\<Name>\UserInfo


    where Name is the name of the program that is experiencing the behavior that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
  3. Click the subkey, and then click Delete on the Edit menu.
  4. Quit Registry Editor.
When you start the program again, the registry key is recreated with the correct text.
