The layer name of an AutoCAD drawing object is truncated when converted in Visio 2003 (829724)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003
  • Microsoft Office Visio Standard 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you try to convert either an AutoCAD .dwg or an AutoCAD .dxf drawing file in Microsoft Office Visio 2003, the layer name of the AutoCAD drawing object may be truncated (cut off) in the Convert CAD Object dialog box.

Note To view the layer name of an AutoCAD drawing object, open the document that contains the AutoCAD drawing object, right-click the AutoCAD drawing object, point to CAD Drawing Object, and then click Convert.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Office Visio 2003 complies with R14 DWG/DXF design specifications. When an AutoCAD drawing object contains a layer name that exceeds 31 characters, the layer name may be truncated between 25 and 31 characters. The layer name limitation per the R14 DWG/DXF design specifications is a maximum of 31 characters.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior in Office Visio 2003, use 31 characters or less for layer names for AutoCAD drawing object.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
