"Error 0xfffffb4d Starting Storage Group <StorageGroupName> on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store" Error Message Is Logged to the Application Event Log (829421)

SYMPTOMS

When you store the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server database files (.stm and .edb) and log files in a shared folder on a remote server, event ID error messages with descriptions that are similar to the following descriptions are logged to the application event log: Error 0xfffffb4d starting Storage Group StorageGroupName on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store. MDB failed to start.

Error 0xffffb4d may also appear as JET_ErrDatabaseNotFound or error -1203.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Exchange 2000 does not support the storage of streaming database files and log files on a remote server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Exchange 2000 Server. This problem is corrected in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.
