You receive a "The security validation for this page is invalid" error message when you try to check out a document in a document library (828811)

SYMPTOMS

When you connect to a document library in your Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site, click a document that you want to check out, and then click Check Out, you may receive the following error message:
The security validation for this page is invalid. Click Back in your Web browser, refresh the page, and try your operation again.
When you click Back in your Web browser, refresh the Web page, and then try to check out the document, you receive the same error message again. As a result, you cannot check out the document from the document library.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if both of the following conditions are true:
  • The Windows SharePoint Services Web site is configured to use Anonymous Access in addition to another method of authentication, such as Basic Authentication.
  • You connect to the site and check out a document in a document library before you authenticate to the site.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, authenticate to the site before you check out the document. To do so, click Sign in on the home page of the Windows SharePoint Services Web site, type your user name and password when you are prompted to do so, and then check out the document that you want from the document library.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
