Restore operation to a new server farm deployment of SharePoint Portal Server does not complete successfully (827859)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you use the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool to back up Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 data and then you restore the data to another server farm, you may find that the restore operation does not complete successfully. You may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Access Denied

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the location where you want to restore the index data is different from the original deployment and the server location of the new deployment that corresponds to the original deployment is not available or does not exist.

By default, the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool restores index data to the original location where the backup operation was performed. For example, this issue may occur if index data on the original server is located in the Applications/SharePoint/SharePoint Portal Server 2003 folder on drive F and drive F on the destination server of the new deployment is the CD-ROM drive.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, in the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool, specify the folder on the destination server where you want to restore the index data.
