SYMPTOMSIn Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3 (SP3), you may notice the following issue. In the Shortcuts pane in Microsoft Outlook, the number that indicates how many unread messages are in a public folder may be incorrect.CAUSEThis problem may occur if the following conditions are true: - You add a shortcut for one or more public folders to the Shortcuts pane in Outlook.
- The public folders that you add to the Shortcuts pane contain one or more subfolders.
- You apply the hotfix that is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base to the Exchange 2000 Server SP3 computer:

In this situation, Exchange 2000 Server SP3 incorrectly determines the number of unread items that are contained in the public folder.
RESOLUTIONHotfix informationTo resolve this problem, obtain the August 2004 Exchange 2000 Server Post-Service Pack 3 update rollup.
