"An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly" error message when you start Microsoft Script Editor (827426)

This article applies to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb) and a Microsoft Access project (.adp).

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Microsoft Script Editor from the Microsoft Access environment, you may receive the following error message:

An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you like to repair this feature now?

When you click No, you may receive the following error messages:

An error has occured. Microsoft Script Editor cannot start.

Note In this message, the word "occured" is a misspelling for the word "occurred".

You tried to perform an operation involving a function or feature that was not installed in this version of Microsoft Access.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following .xml files on your computer are missing or are corrupted:

Viewssrc.xml
Viewsspt.xml

RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem, do either of the following:

Repair the Script Editor feature. To do this, follow the steps to repair the Script Editor feature in Access.

Notice that when you repair the Script Editor feature in Office, the Viewssrc.xml file and the Viewsspt.xml file are regenerated and then Script Editor starts successfully.
Start Script Editor. You receive the following error message:
An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you like to repair this feature now?
Click Yes.
