Mappings Are Not Deleted When You Delete Excel Worksheets (827301)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Excel 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you create a mapped Excel workbook from various external data source bindings (for example, bindings from an XML instance or from XML Schema Definition [XSD] schema files) that are mapped onto different worksheets, the mappings to these sources are stored in the workbook itself instead of in the individual worksheets.

If you then delete a worksheet, the information about the data sources and some other sensitive information may still be present in the workbook. A malicious user may be able to view this information by using a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro.

If you save your workbook as an interactive Web page or as an XML workbook, this information can be viewed through Notepad or through another text-editing program.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
