Text block shape does not have the correct dimensions on a drawing page in Visio 2003 (827286)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003
  • Microsoft Office Visio Standard 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you drag a text block shape onto a scaled drawing page, such as a floor plan, the shape may appear very narrow and the text may extend outside the expected shape boundaries in a narrow column.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the text block shape master is scaled and then dragged onto a page that has a different scale. Microsoft Office Visio 2003 treats the text block as an object that has dimensions and preserves the width of the text block.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, create a new master text block shape that has no scale. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, point to New, point to Block Diagram, and then click Basic Diagram.

By default, the scaling of the basic diagram is set to No scaling.
  2. Drag the text block master that you want to use onto the drawing page.
  3. On the File menu, point to Shapes, point to My Shapes, and then click Favorites.
  4. Drag the shape from the drawing page onto the Favorites stencil.

The new master shape has no scaling and can be used in scaled drawing pages.
