Remove Visual Studio .NET 2003 by using the Add or Remove Programs tool

To remove Visual Studio .NET 2003 by using the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • In Category view in Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add or Remove Programs under or pick a Control Panel icon.
    • In Classic view in Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, and then click Change/Remove. Follow the onscreen instructions to remove Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003.

Manually remove Visual Studio .NET 2003

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To manually remove Visual Studio .NET 2003 from your computer, follow these steps:
  1. Remove Visual Studio .NET 2003 from the Microsoft Windows Installer cache. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open text box, type installer, and then click OK.

      Microsoft Windows Installer starts, and then a list appears that contains the cached Windows Installer (.msi) files for the programs that are installed on your computer.
    3. On the View menu, click Details.
    4. Right-click the Date Modified column heading, and then click Comments.
    5. In the Comments column, locate the Windows Installer file that has one of the following titles:
      • Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect 2003 - English
      • Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Developer 2003 - English
      • Visual Studio .NET Professional 2003 - English
      • Visual Basic .NET Standard 2003 - English
      • Visual C# .NET Standard 2003 - English
      • Visual C++ .NET Standard 2003 - English
      • Visual J# .NET Standard 2003 - English
    6. Right-click this cached Windows Installer file, and then click Uninstall.
    7. Quit Windows Installer.
  2. Use the MSIZap.exe utility to remove all Visual Studio .NET 2003 product keys from the registry. To obtain the MSIZap.exe utility, download the Microsoft Windows Installer Software Development Kit (SDK).

    For more information about how to download the Windows Installer SDK, visit the following Microsoft Web site: To remove all Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 product keys from the registry, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open text box, type cmd, and then click OK.
    3. At the command prompt, type CD\, and then press ENTER.
    4. Locate the directory where the Windows Installer SDK has put the Msizap.exe utility.
    5. At the command prompt, type msizap TP {Product Code}, and then press ENTER.

      The product code depends on the product version that is installed. The following is the list of commands that include the correct product code for each product version:
      • Enterprise Architect: msizap TP {E05F0409-0E9A-48A1-AC04-E35E3033604A}
      • Enterprise Developer: msizap TP {60600409-EA9B-45E9-A468-2C68C8DE70DF}
      • Professional: msizap TP {20610409-CA18-41A6-9E21-A93AE82EE7C5}
      • Microsoft Visual Basic .NET: msizap TP {F0620409-8B20-48A0-ACA0-09D5FC90D316}
      • Microsoft Visual C# .NET: msizap TP {70630409-190D-4B06-A8AD-86DA9CE92D73}
      • Microsoft Visual C++ .NET: msizap TP {A0640409-7336-456F-9FA9-1F129F0547F4}
      • Microsoft Visual J# .NET: msizap TP {90650409-E202-4014-B6A4-D277D1C16D5C}
  3. Remove the components from Windows Component Update in Setup. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open text box, type installer, and then click OK.

      Windows Installer starts, and then a list appears that contains the cached Windows Installer files for the programs that are installed on your computer.
    3. On the View menu, click Details.
    4. Right-click the Date Modified column header, and then click Comments.
    5. In the Comments column, locate the Windows Installer file that has one of the following titles:
      • Microsoft FrontPage Client - English
      • Visual Studio.NET Baseline - English

        Note In the user interface (UI), "Visual Studio.NET" contains a typographical error. It should appear as "Visual Studio .NET".
    6. Right-click this cached Windows Installer file, and then click Uninstall.
    7. Quit Windows Installer.
  4. Use the MSIZap.exe utility to remove all Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 Windows Component Update product keys from the registry. To do this, run the following commands, including the product keys:
    • Weccom.msi: msizap TP {17B66E83-1BC9-11D5-A54A-0090278A1BB8}
    • Baseline: msizap TP {D4D24FE5-FAB3-4FE2-AFFC-623955F4DF3A}
  5. Rename the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 folder and the VS7Debug folder. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open text box, type %programfiles%, and then click OK.
    3. Locate and then rename the Microsoft Visual Studio .Net 2003 folder.
    4. Double-click the Common Files folder, and then double-click the Microsoft Shared folder.
    5. Locate and then rename the VS7Debug folder.

      Note You cannot rename this folder if the Machine Debug Manager (Mdm.exe) service is running. You must first shut down the Machine Debug Manager before you rename this folder. To stop the Machine Debug Manager Service, click Start, click Run, type Services.MSC, right-click Machine Debug Manager in the list of services, and click Stop.
    6. Close this window.
  6. Delete the registry keys that remain. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open text box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    3. Delete the following registry keys:
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\7.1
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Visual JSharp\7.1
      • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\7.1
    4. Quit Registry Editor.
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. Delete the contents of the Temp folder. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open text box, type %Temp%, and then click OK.
    3. Press CTRL+A to select the contents of the folder.
    4. Press DELETE.

      Note If you cannot delete all the selected files, delete as many files as you can.
    5. Close this window.
  9. Quit any antivirus programs or any firewall programs that may be running.

    Note Microsoft recommends that you disconnect any cable or DSL modem that may be connected to your computer before you quit your antivirus or firewall programs.
  10. Install Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003.
  11. Start your antivirus or firewall programs, and then reconnect your cable or DSL modem.
