When to Manually Install the Virtual PC Additions (824617)

SUMMARY

This article describes scenarios where you may have to manually install the Virtual PC Additions.

In some scenarios, the Virtual PC Additions are automatically installed in your virtual machine. For example, when you use the option to install preconfigured hard disk data from the Virtual PC for Mac installer disk or from a Virtual PC OS Pack, the Additions are preinstalled on the drive C image of the virtual machine. Also, when you duplicate the drive C image that is installed by Virtual PC 4.0, the Additions are duplicated on the new drive image. You do not have to do anything else for the Additions to work.

However, in the following scenarios, you must manually install the Additions:

• When you upgrade from an earlier version of Virtual PC, the Additions are not automatically installed on drive C. When you upgrade from an earlier version of Virtual PC, the Additions are saved to your Windows desktop by the Upgrader.
• When you install your own operating system, the Additions are not automatically installed on drive C. When you do this, the Additions installer file is located in the PC folder of your Virtual PC CD-ROM. Copy the installer file to the desktop, and then double-click the installer file from the guest operating system to install the Additions.
• When you create a new drive, the Additions are not automatically installed. The Additions may not be required in this case, unless you plan to install a Windows operating system on the drive.
