The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Information Services 5.0

SUMMARY

When you install Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4), you may receive the following error message:
Unable to write ScriptMaps metabase entry.
If you click OK to close the error message, you receive a message that states that Windows 2000 SP4 was installed successfully. When you restart the computer, all services run as expected.

You may also receive an error message in the event log that similar to the following:
Event ID: 4374
Event Source: NtServicePack
Description: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 installation failed, leaving Windows 2000 partially updated. An error in updating your system has occurred."
Windows 2000 SP4 is programmed to remap the .htr extension from Ism.dll to Asp.dll for security reasons. This configuration change is performed during the post-SP4 installation phase. You can safely ignore this error message because Windows 2000 SP4 was installed successfully.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft is still researching the underlying cause of this error message. You can safely ignore this error message if the Windows 2000 SP4 installation continues and all Internet Information Services (IIS) services start as expected when the server is restarted. Some ScriptMaps of the .htr extensions may remain mapped to Ism.dll. To make sure that all .htr extensions are mapped to Asp.dll, rerun Sp4iis.exe without arguments.

Note SP4IIS.exe can be found in the service pack itself. You must manually extract the files from the service pack to gain access to this utility.

Note ScriptMaps represents the entries in the metabase that map approved extensions (for example, .asp or .htr) to the corresponding DLL.
