In Virtual PC, you can easily make a connection with the Internet by either Shared IP or by dialing directly from the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Set Up Shared IP

  1. For Virtual PC for Mac 5, follow these steps:
    1. On the Networking menu, click VPC Preferences.
    2. Click to select the Enable Networking check box and the Share Mac's IP Address check box.

    For Virtual PC for Mac 6 and 7, follow these steps:
    1. On the Window menu, click Virtual PC List, and then click Settings.
    2. Click Network in the left pane, click to select the Enable Networking check box and then click Shared Networking.
  2. In Windows, start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  4. Click the Connections tab.
  5. Click LAN Settings.
  6. Click to select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK.
  7. Click Setup to start the Internet Connection Wizard.
  8. Click I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN), and then click Next.
  9. Click I connect through a local area network (LAN), and then click Next.
  10. Click to select the Automatic discovery of proxy server (recommended) check box, and then click Next.
  11. Follow the instructions on the screen to set up your Internet e-mail account, and then click Finish.

Dial Directly from the Windows Operating System

Configure Virtual Machine Communications

First, configure your communications settings on the virtual machine. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Open Settings for the virtual machine in the Virtual PC List window.
  2. Click either COM1 Port or COM2 Port.
  3. In the Port Settings list, click Mac Serial Port.
  4. In the Mac serial port list, click either Modem Port or Printer Port.
  5. Click OK.

Configure Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition Modem Settings

To configure your modem in Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Modems.
  3. Click to select the Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list check box, and then click Next.
  4. Under Manufacturers, click Standard modem type. For Models, select the Standard option with your modem's speed.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click the port that you are using for your modem: COM1 or COM2. Make sure to click the same port you clicked in the "Configure Virtual Machine Communications" section of this article.
  7. Click Next. The Windows wizard installs the modem.
  8. Type your Country and Area Code (if in the US or Canada). Click Next. Modem installation is complete at this point.
  9. Click Finish.
  10. The Modem Properties dialog box appears. Click OK.

Configure Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP Modem Settings

To configure modem settings in Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double click Phones and Modem Options.
  3. Type your Country and Area Code (if it is prompted), and then click Next.
  4. Click the Modems tab.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click to select the Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list check box and then click Next.
  7. Under Manufacturers, click (Standard modem types). For Models, select the Standard option with your modem's speed.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Click the port that you are using for your modem: COM1 or COM2. Make sure to click the same port you clicked in the "Configure Virtual Machine Communications" section of this article.
  10. Click Next. The Windows wizard installs the modem.
  11. Click Finish. The modem is now installed.
  12. When the Modem Properties dialog box appears, click OK.
