Cannot Connect to the Internet Through AirPort (824359)



The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

You cannot establish an Internet connection while you are using a virtual machine.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when your Mac computer connects to the Internet through an AirPort wireless network connection.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the following methods.

Verify AirPort Internet Connection

To verify your AirPort Internet connection, see the following AppleCare document, "101858: AirPort: Troubleshooting Outline." To do this, visit the following Apple Web site:

Update AirPort Software

Make sure that you are using the most recent version of the AirPort software.

For Mac OS X

If you are using Mac OS X, you can use Software Update to download and install the most recent update of the AirPort software. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. On the Dock, click System Preferences.
  2. Click Software Update.
  3. Click Check Now.
  4. Click the items that you want to install.
  5. Click Install.
  6. Type an Administrator user name and password, and then click OK
Note You may have to repeat these steps several times if your version is of AirPort is very out of date.

For Mac OS 9

Use the Software Update control panel to update to the latest version of the AirPort software.
  1. On the Apple menu, point to Control Panel, and then click Software Update.
  2. Click Update Now.
  3. Click the items that you want to install.
  4. Click Install.
Note You may have to repeat these steps several times if your version of AirPort is very out of date.

Use Shared Networking in Virtual PC

You can set up your virtual machine to automatically use the network settings of your Mac through Shared Networking. To set up Shared Networking, follow these steps:
  1. Start Virtual PC.
  2. On the Virtual PC List, click the virtual machine that you want to configure.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click Networking.
  5. Click to select the Enable networking check box.
  6. Click Shared Networking.
  7. Click OK.
When you start up the virtual machine, it uses the network settings of your Mac and accesses the AirPort correctly.
