Messages in your Hotmail mailbox are marked as Read when you press CTRL+Q in Outlook 2003 (824102)

SYMPTOMS

If you select a list of unread e-mail messages, and then you press CTRL+Q to mark the selected messages as Read, unmarked, unread e-mail messages may also be marked as Read.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you select a number of unread e-mail messages, and then press CTRL and click one or more of the unread e-mail messages to remove them from the selection.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, select only the unread e-mail messages that you want to mark as Read.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
