WD98: Documents Take Longer than Expected to Save (823847)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

You may notice that each time you save a Microsoft Word 98 document, it may take longer than expected to save the file.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you have the Allow Fast Saves option turned on. The Allow Fast Saves option enables Word to save documents quickly by appending changes to the end of a file instead of rewriting the whole file.

However, as you continue to make changes, deletions and additions to your file, the file has to store those changes and reference where they belong in the document or where they were. This increases the file size each time you save it and this now larger file takes longer to save.

RESOLUTION

To turn the Allow Fast Saves option on and off, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click the Save tab.
  3. Click to clear the Allow Fast Saves check box.
  4. Click OK.
