WD98: "Compile Error in Hidden Module: AutoExec" Error Message When You Start Word 98 (823846)


The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you start Word 98 Macintosh Edition, you receive the following error message:
Compile Error in Hidden Module: Autoexec

CAUSE

This problem occurs if one or more Office 98 Macintosh Edition preference file becomes damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem follow these steps:
  1. On your desktop, double-click your hard disk icon.
  2. Click System Folder, and then click the Extensions folder.
  3. Locate and then drag the following files to the Trash:
    • Microsoft Component Library
    • Microsoft OLE Automation
    • Microsoft OLE Library
    • Microsoft Structured Storage
  4. Close the Extensions folder, and then open the Preferences folder
  5. Locate and then drag the following files to the Trash:
    • Embedding Preferences
    • PPC Registration Database
  6. Close all folders and start one of the Office 98 programs.

    This automatically invokes the First Run Install feature, because of the missing extensions. Fresh copies of each of these files will be installed.
