Feature Pack: The Web Reporting Tool Displays a SQL Error Message When You Try to Run a Report That Is Based on a Company Name (823829)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use the SMS Web Reporting tool from the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Software Update Services Feature Pack to run a report that is based on a company name, you may receive the following SQL error message if the company name that you select or enter contains a comma:
There was an error in the SQL Statement.
The following error was returned:
Procedure or function usp_SMSR501 has too many arguments specified. [-2147217900]
If you believe this query is syntactically correct, please refer to the release notes topic Custom Reports and Column Picker Limitations for information that may help you resolve this error.
For example, you may receive this error message after you click the arrow next to a company name to run the List all software companies report or after you type a company name to run the List all products for a specific company report.

CAUSE

If a software company name contains a comma, SMS Web Reporting may pass incorrect data to the SQL stored procedure that it is using to generate the report.

How to Install the Hotfix

Before you install this hotfix, you must first remove the existing installation of SMS Web Reporting. When you remove the existing installation, any existing custom reports that you have created are retained. However, as a precaution, it is recommended that you back up the current installation of SMS Web Reporting before you install this hotfix.

To install the hotfix:
  1. Remove the existing installation:
    1. On the desktop, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. If Web Reports Add-in for Software Updates (SMS Additional Web Reports) is installed, click SMS Additional Web Reports in the list of currently installed programs, and then click Change/Remove to remove it. When the program is removed, click Close.
    4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    5. Click SMS Web Reporting in the list of currently installed programs, and then click Change/Remove to remove it. When the program is removed, click Close.
  2. Install the updated SMS Web Reporting tool:
    1. Run Setup for the appropriate SMSWebReporting: SMSWebReporting_ XXX .exe (where XXX represents the 3-digit language code).
    2. If you previously also had Web Reports Add-in for Software Updates installed, install the updated Web Reports Add-in for Software Updates by running Setup for the appropriate SMSAddWebReports: SMSAddWebReports_ XXX .exe (where XXX represents the 3-digit language code).

If you currently do not want to install the Web Reports Add-in for Software Updates but decide later to install it, make sure that you install the version that is released as part of this hotfix (or a later version) to avoid overwriting newer common files that are shared between Web Reports Add-in for Software Updates and SMS Web Reporting.
