How to Troubleshoot Problems with Clip Gallery in Office 2000 and Office 97 (823760)

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
If you cannot insert Clip Art in a Microsoft Office document, use one of the following methods to troubleshoot Clip Gallery.

Method 1: Rename Artgal50.mmc

  1. Click Start, and then click Search.
  2. Under Search Companion, click All files and folders.
  3. Type the file name ARTGAL50.MMC, and then click Search.
  4. Click Artgal50.mmc, and then, click Rename on the File menu.
  5. Type Artgal50.old, and then press ENTER.
  6. Click Start, point to All Programs, then point to Microsoft Clip Gallery, and then click Microsoft Clip Gallery.
The Artgal50.mmc file is automatically rebuilt. If this does not resolve the problem, use Method 2.

Method 2: Completely Remove and Then Reinstall Clip Gallery

To completely remove Clip Gallery, and then reinstall Clip Gallery, follow these steps.

Step A: Remove Clip Gallery

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of currently installed programs, click your installation of Microsoft Office 2000 or Microsoft Office 97, and then click Change.
  4. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
  5. Expand the Office Tools node.
  6. Click the icon to the left of Clip Gallery, and then click Not Available.
  7. Click Update Now and follow the instructions on the screen to remove Clip Gallery.

Step B: Remove Clip Gallery Registry Settings

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and select the following registry key: My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00021290-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
  4. On the File menu, click Export. In the Export Registry File dialog box, type a unique file name like "RegKey1" in the File name box, click Selected branch, and then click Save to make a backup copy of the key.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Delete. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the key.
  6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for each of the following keys:

    My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MS_ClipArt_Gallery
    My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MS_ClipArt_Gallery.1
    My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MS_ClipArt_Gallery.2
    My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MS_ClipArt_Gallery.5
    My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ClipArt Gallery
    My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\ClipArt Gallery

    Backup each key with a different file name.
  7. On the File menu, click Exit.

Step C: Remove the Clip Gallery Folders

  1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  2. Locate and rename the following folders:

    drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Artgalry

    drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Clipart

    drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Clipart

    drive:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Catalog\Artgal50.mmc
    OR
    drive:\Documents and Settings\<username>\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Media Catalog\Artgal50.mmc

    where drive is the drive where the operating system is installed.

Step D: Reinstall Clip Gallery

  1. Click Start and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of currently installed programs, click your installation of Microsoft Office 2000 or Microsoft Office 97, and then click Change.
  4. Click Add or Remove Features and then click Next.
  5. Expand the Office Tools node.
  6. Click the icon to the left of Clip Gallery, and then click Run All From My Computer.
  7. Click Update Now, and then follow the instructions on the screen to install Clip Gallery.
