SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Project 2000, you receive the following error message:
Internal error 1401 cannot write to: software\classes

CAUSE

This issue occurs because you do not have the correct permissions to modify the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes

You must have Full Control permissions to modify this key and its child keys.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To resolve this issue, you must obtain Full Control permissions. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes

  3. On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
  4. Make sure that the Administrators group has Full Control and Read permissions selected. If they are not, follow these steps:
    1. Click to select the Full Control check box.
    2. Click to select the Read check box.
    3. Click the Advanced button.
    4. Click to select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects check box.
    5. Click OK.
    6. You receive the following error message:
This will remove explicitly defined permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions to those child objects. Only inheritable permissions propagated from Classes will take effect.

      Do you wish to continue?
Click Yes, and then click OK.
You may receive the following error message:
Registry Editor could not set the security in the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys.
    Click OK.
  5. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.
After the computer restarts, install Project 2000.
