  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services

SYMPTOMS

When you click Configure full-text search on the Windows SharePoint Services Central Administration page to configure full-text search for a virtual server, you may receive the following error message:
The database this server is using does not support search

CAUSE

This problem occurs if Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) is used as the database server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, upgrade the database instance from MSDE to Microsoft SQL Server 2000, apply Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later, and then configure full-text search for the virtual server. Follow these steps to upgrade the database instance to SQL Server 2000 SP3 or later on a single-server deployment of Windows SharePoint Services:
  1. Run the SQL Server 2000 Setup, and then click SQL Server 2000 Components.
  2. Click Install Database Server, and then click Next.
  3. On the Computer Name page, click Local computer, and then click Next.
  4. On the Installation Selection page, click Upgrade, remove, or add components to an existing instance of SQL Server, and then click Next.
  5. On the Instance Name page, click to clear the Default check box (if it is selected), click SHAREPOINT in the Instance name box, and then click Next.
  6. On the Existing Installation page, verify that Upgrade your existing installation is selected, and then click Next.
  7. On the Upgrade page, click to select the Yes, upgrade my programs check box, and then click Next.
  8. On the Licensing Options page, specify the licensing options that you want, and then click Continue.
  9. When you are prompted to install additional components, click Yes.
  10. On the Select Components page, click Server Components (but do not click to clear the Server Components check box), and then click to select the Full-Text Search check box.
  11. Click Management Tools (but do not click to clear the Management Tools check box), and then click to select both the Enterprise Manager and the Query Analyzer check boxes (if they are not already selected).
  12. Select any other components that you want, and then click Next.
  13. On the Start Copying Files page, click Next, and then click Finish.
  14. Install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later. When you install SQL Server 2000 SP3, you receive the SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 Setup dialog box that contains both the Upgrade Microsoft Search and the apply SQL Server 2000 SP3 (required) check boxes. If you want to have full-text search functionality on the server, you must click to select the Upgrade Microsoft Search and apply SQL Server 2000 SP3 (required) check box.
