"Microsoft Office Access Needs VBA Macro Language Support to Complete This Action" Error Message When You Do a Minimal Upgrade and Then Start Access 2003 (823227)

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade Microsoft Office XP to Microsoft Office 2003, and then you start Access 2003, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Office Access needs VBA macro language support to complete this action. This feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install it now?


In the Microsoft Office Access dialog box, when you click No, and then you create a new database, Access 2003 quits unexpectedly. You may receive the following error message:


Microsoft Office Access has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

CAUSE

When you complete the minimal upgrade from Office XP to Office 2003, the Office XP version of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications is left behind on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, install the correct version of Visual Basic for Applications. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Put the Office 2003 installation CD in the CD drive.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type <drive>:\setup, where <drive> is your CD-ROM drive.
  4. In the Microsoft Office 2003 Setup dialog box under the Maintenance Mode Options section, click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
  5. Under the Custom Setup section, click to select the Choose advanced customization of applications check box, and then click Next.
  6. Under the Choose update options for applications and tools section, expand Office Shared Features.
  7. Click the down arrow next to Visual Basic for Applications, and then click either the Run from My Computer option or the Run all from My Computer option.
  8. In the Microsoft Office 2003 Setup dialog box, click Update.
