Compiler-Optimized Code May Cause Loops to Terminate Early (823020)


The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

Sometimes code that the compiler generates may result in loop structures that quit prematurely. Loop structures only quit prematurely when you enable any of the following compiler optimizations:
  • /Og (Global Optimizations).
  • /O2 (Maximize for speed).
  • /Ox (Full Optimization).

CAUSE

When the compiler generates computer code and then applies selected compiler optimizations, the code that the compiler generates for loop structures may cause the loop to prematurely quit.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can use the /Og- (Global Optimizations) Microsoft C++ compiler switch to compile your project. (This may result in a performance penalty.)

To set the compiler switch, open your project properties dialog box, and then click Command Line in the C++ folder. In the Additional Options: section, type /Og-. Click OK to close the project properties dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Service Pack for Visual Studio .NET 2003 that contains this hotfix.
